Malta Introduces the Commercial Yacht Code 2025 – A New Era in Commercial Yachting

On 30 May 2025, Transport Malta released the Commercial Yacht Code 2025 (CYC 2025)—a pivotal upgrade from the 2020 edition. The new Code comes into force on 1 July 2025 and applies to yachts ≥ 24m carrying up to 12 passengers, including high-speed and special category vessels.

What’s New in CYC 2025?
• Refined Navigation Categories – Introduction of an Extended Short Range (up to 150 nm) category alongside Short Range (60 nm) and Unrestricted Navigation.
• Stricter Safety & Environmental Rules – Ban on asbestos, mandatory lightning protection systems, and compliance with the IMO Polar Code.
• Structural, Stability & Propulsion Upgrades – New hull integrity and watertight standards, plus accommodation for hybrid and electric propulsion.
• Enhanced Crew Welfare – Improved accommodation and working conditions; training requirements for non-crew personnel.
• Major Refit Standards – Yachts undergoing major conversions must now meet new-build standards.
• Stronger Compliance Oversight – Tighter audit protocols and better alignment with SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, and MLC conventions.

⏳ Transition Timeline
Existing yachts must comply by their first renewal survey after 31 December 2025.

Why it Matters?
CYC 2025 positions Malta as a modern, safe, and forward-thinking maritime hub. It supports innovation, sustainability, and regulatory clarity for yacht owners and operators alike.
