Cayman Islands Yacht safety guidance update November 2025

Cayman Islands regulatory updates: What Yacht Owners need to know

On 25 November 2025, the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry released two important guidance notes (CIGN 07/2025 and 08/2025) that affect all Cayman-flagged yachts. These updates introduce key changes to lifting gear, fire-fighting equipment, and pilot transfer arrangements. Here’s what yacht owners and managers need to know.

Lifting gear and fire-fighting foam: Act now
From 1 January 2026, all new lifting appliances (cranes, winches, davits) installed onboard must meet classification society standards. Existing gear must be tested and certified at the next renewal survey after that date. Make sure your equipment has up-to-date load test certificates.

At the same time, any fire-fighting foam containing PFOS is banned from use or storage. Crews should review current systems and replace any older foam or extinguisher charges with PFOS-free alternatives before the next survey.

Pilot transfer rules: prepare by 2028
From 1 January 2028, all yachts must comply with new pilot ladder and boarding arrangement standards. Pilots will be required to refuse boarding if gear doesn’t meet these stricter rules. That includes ladders rigged incorrectly or missing certified handholds and securing points.

Make sure your yacht has:
  • Certified ladders and strongpoints with minimum 48kN strength;
  • Proper handholds and unobstructed hull access;
  • Adequate lighting at the boarding station;
  • A spare pilot ladder and ropes onboard;
  • A clear record of ladder age and test certificates.
We recommend upgrading arrangements during your next refit and preparing a "Pilot Transfer Arrangement Booklet" to show compliance.
